Should Shakespeare's works continue to be studied at the high school level?

We should continue studying about Shakespeare's work because it shows the most amazing plays made by himself and also shows about how complex love and poetry really is back then. Also if you're an actor or trying to be one. Shakespeare is great to study of how they act and show tragedy, love, disaster, and etc...

I think Shakespeare should continue being taught in high school. Shakespeare's work is defined and takes actual thinking to comprehend. Many high school students want to go through high school doing the minimal amount of work possible. That's why many students don't want to continue it. Shakespeare's pieces that are studied in high school are a preview and a jump start to what is studied in college. Therefore, Shakespeare should continue to be taught in high school.

Great point on how Shakespeare's writing or "work is defined and takes actual thinking to comprehend."

Side: yes

Shakespeare’s work should still be studied in high school. Not only is he as a person a part of our history, but his works is as well. Many theatrical play writes, directors, and even theatrical teachers use his works as reference and inspiration. Learning it in high school helps to expand our horizons and think deeper about little things. Seeing how Shakespeare used everyday life, and emotions to create stories and plays that are significantly similar to what others go through each day can help us to better express ourselves. It shows us that there are other ways to view the world, and there are more creative ways to show how we view our thoughts and emotions. Just like History, Math, and Science, are taught to enhance our intelligence, studying Shakespeare’s work can do the same as well.

I believe that Shakespeare's works should be studied at the high school level, but on the Honors and AP level. Shakespeare's works are very admirable and everyone should be exposed to them; however, I feel that some students at the high school levels do not respect and take his works very seriously. Shakespeare's works are profound and some people can't understand it.

Having shakespeare's work in high schools could have a substantial affect in student's studies and knowledge. Most high school students believe in just doing the least minimum amount of work, and having to study shakespeare's writting's destroys most high school students mind set. I believe that shakespeare's work should continue to be studied at the high school level simply because this subject can further our education and could prepare us for post high school education.

Side: yes

Shakespeare should continue to be taught at a high school level because he has made monumental literature steps that has altered the way plays, sonnets, poems, and even stories were written. Without Shakespeare there would be far less great works for kids to study in high school, therefore we should study him.

Side: yes

I think that Shakespeare should be studied in high school because even though people don't speak the way they did back in his day, its good literature and makes people think about what he was trying to say and portray in his plays. People seem to not want to read it simply because they find it boring, but if you actually took the time to try and understand what it meant and was saying, you may see why so many people back then enjoyed his plays/literature.

Shakespeare should continue to be taught in high schools.

His works are probably the most difficult and most challenging portions in all of literature. There are countless courses in school which may or may not benefit in the outside, however Shakespeare illustrates the most benevolent and nefarious aspects of human nature in such ways that are unique in literature.

Examples:

Macbeth's relentless quest for power, Romeo and Juliet's teenage lust, Caesar and Cleopatra's undying passions, Othello's unfounded jealousy driving him to murder, the consequences of greed and envy which lead to murder such as in Julius Caesar.

Personally I love Romeo + Juliet and his life story in general, there for i am for it. However, regardless of you liking him or not his genius and the level of english his stories teach is undeniable.

I think that Shakespeare’s work should be continued to be studied in high schools because it can help us become skilled at the writing, and literature that was used in the past, and help us comprehend Shakespeare's work. I also think it should be studied because it prepares you for college and the type of stories that are required to be read in English courses.

Side: yes

I feel that Shakespeare should continue being taught in the high school level. It offers an out reach of education. However i feel that Shakespeare should be taught in a more modern fashion.

Side: yes

I believe that Shakespeare's work should continue to be studied at the high school level because, it is very knowledgeable, and also teenagers can learn a thing or to from Shakespeare about love and real poetry and plays. Also, his work has meaning that is still similar to the years now, alot has changed and it is good to compare the changes from the years with Shakespeare and now.

Side: yes

I do believe that the high school systems should continue to flourish the works of Shakespeare. Although he was not modern or up to speed with our times, he was and is a historical figure that shows the progression of how far the art of playwright and poetry has come. It is the best of our histories past that connects us to the sufficiency of our future.

Side: yes

Teaching Shakespeare in high school does not harm anyone in any way. It only makes you that much wiser, and exercises your brain.. Kids who don't enjoy learning it are just lazy. It will only broaden your understanding of how your language began and has evolved and maybe even give you some appreciation for they way things are now even if the way things are now is improper. You wouldn't want to stop teaching about world history would you? I mean why not it's the past. It's the same here learning this just gives you more appreciation and knowledge and the saying goes history repeats itself, maybe we will be speaking Shakespearian again one day.

Side: yes

I think it should be taught, not from the facts that I know about Shakespeare, but what I hear about his works. His writings, are above "my" reading levels, therefor giving me somewhat of a challenge. I'm more neutral in this debate, but variations of new and old works should be studied.

Side: yes

I strongly agree that Shakespeare’s works should continue to be studied at the highs school level. Shakespeare’s impact in the English department is like Michael Jordan’s on basketball or Tiger Woods on golf. Shakespeare’s work is pure genius and every high school student should have the chance of studying it. Studying his work really defines breaking down complex readings, and really trying to understand it. Studying his work could really benefit every student’s outlook on English.

Side: yes

Shakespeare has taught me many things. The most valuable thing to me was not to let your anger of something long ago ruin relationships now. Besides that, it gives us some variety, and lets us slip into roles and characters outside of our daily lives. He's plays a key role in literature and eliminating him from our curriculum would mean amongst other classroom teachings he is of little importance.

Side: yes

I do believe that the fundamental elements of all of the Shakespeare plays should be taught in the public school systems. The reason being is because his work has lasted the test of time and generations. Almost all of elemental literature is based upon his work and should be studied in high school, So students can more understand and conceptualize hard work.

Side: yes

Yes, I think that we should still study William Shakespeare’s work. In order to find another way to write literature in English class, it should be in the curriculum for the high school senior, or for high school, in general.

I mean, sure, the way Shakespeare would have the old-english way of grammar is pretty boring to most students. It is a pain to read, but I still have to get through it, as well as everyone else. We as students still should get to know the real roots of English literature; in Shakespeare; and how it has changed through time.

Side: yes

I think that Shakespeare should continue being taught in High School because it helps the students get used to thinking at a higher level so when they are ready to go to college they see what is expected of them.

I agree because you actually have to think when you read it, you can't just read it once and totally uncerstand it.

Nice Point. I have read Othello 3 times and Macbeth twice and I didn't really begin to understand some of the analogys and clever use of language until the second time.

Side: yes

I feel like yes high school students should still study with Shakespeare’s works. The first reason is because it teaches you to think out side of your box at a college level. The second reason is because it teaches you to read at a college literature level. I also feel that getting more in depth of the old English language will also help you as a student and will teach you how to use proper grammar. Old English language will also help your speech so when you are having a conversation with another person you look and sound smarter.

I agree that Shakespeare's works makes you think at a higher level. But so does Edgar Allen Poe and his works are way more interesting in my opinion. He talks about death and the supernatural, not about love and conquering other kingdoms. The Raven was kind of difficult to understand too but it was interesting, I paid full attention.

Side: No

Although Shakepeare was around many years ago, he continues to be one of the best writers. Therefore, I think his works should continue to be studied at the high school level so we can learn from the best.

I think that saying shakespeare has been around many years and he continues to be one of the best writers is a fact that you have learned, its not your opinion about weather high school students should still study his work.

Side: No

Yes, because a lot of the grammar used in the old English is very interesting. To see how the times have changed and the pronunciation’s of the words. The way that Shakespeare uses his words are so different than the way we talk or write now in this time. If you were to read the actual literature you may struggle but if you take your time and give it patience you may actually catch on to the way they used their words and start to understand it. It different than reading a book that was written a year ago; its more than that its Old Literature.

I believe that shakespeare should continue to be taught in high schools. I think that it's a great way to learn about history and literature in the same lesson. We can learn about the Literature in the old days. I think that it should be taught at a high school level because it seems too mature for any level younger. Just by the form the stories are told.

Side: yes

YES I do think Shakespeare's work should continue to be studied in high school. Because growing up people were taught that English was spoken one way. People may speak it with an accent but it was the same language. But Shakespeare takes the English language to another level. He's speaking English but to the average person its like he's speaking another language. However I do not think that it should be studied more than once in high school. For example we studied Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare whenever I was a freshman and now I am a senior and were studying his work again.

Side: yes

I think it should be kept in high school because i like romeo and juliet and i know that there is so many new things he has in store for us. I also think that we as high school student's love shakespeare books and movies. I also think he should keep writing and doing what he doing to make his money.

Side: yes

I think Shakespeare should still be taught in school because, not only is he the best writer that there ever was, but it helps you learn the old style of English. With the old style of English, people get to learn the origin of majority of the words that we use today. In today's society, we are all caught up in today's modern English, we don't take the time and take a look in the past and reflect upon the words of our past.

Side: yes

I believe the Shakespeare should continue to be taught in schools because he was a very good writer and its classic. Also a lot of people can relate to what he is writing about, like Romeo and Juliet for myself (without the deaths).

Side: yes

Yes but then no. I said that because you can learn a lot from Shakespeare and you can learn more things that happen before any of our time. I also said no, because when reading his plays and what not it's kind of hard to understand what is going on or where they coming from even when it has been translated into a version where the readers can understand. Yes some of his writings are boring and make it kind of hard on some people that have a hard time reading but its something that we will have to learn and it is also part of what we have to learn in high school.

Side: yes

I think that it should be kept in school, its not just letters that we are reading its more then that, its part of history. shakespeate's story's teaches us something about life. It makes us think on what we are reading and not a lot of story's have that no more you really just read to read.

Side: yes

Yes,I think Shakespeare's work should be continue to be studied at the high school level, because you can learn a lot from such a great and intelligent writer. If Shakespeare's works continue to be studied in high school many students would have a good understanding of it by time they enter college. As for myself I would want to know something about Shakespeare's work before I leave high school.

Side: yes

In my opinion, I think that we should continue reading Shakespeare's work, because he has gone this far on his work, so why not continue. We can learn on how it was set a long time ago, and discuss it. He has written a lot of good stories, and at the same time they are interesting.

Side: yes

I am 50/50 in this one. I agree that you do not learn actual English from his work, but I also agree it helps the student learn to comprehend more complex things.

I think that school should focus on teaching students about actual English skills though but still study Shakespear. Just maybe not test them on his work as knowing how to comprehend a Shakespeare novel isn't going to help you in the real world!

I think that Shakespeare's work should continue to be read at the high school level because his work is very well written and that makes students become better writers. Reading stories in old english, provides students with an understanding of where the english language came from. It's very important to understand themes and Shakespeare's work is full of different themes.

I think it should be read at high school level because Shakespeare is a great story writer. The students would learn a lot from his writing because he is such a visual writer. You can picture everything he is talking about. Shakespeare’s writing technique is unusual to high schoolers because it is still new to us, and i think it would be a great style of writing to be around.

Yes, I think that Shakespeare's work should continue should be studied at the high school level because even though students may think that it is boring it's a really good way to have students connect with his writing. I think that the teacher uses Shakespeare's work in a way that students can comprehend and relate to it then students wouldn't see his work as dull. I personally don't think that Shakespeare is boring or dumb i think it's a great way to learn grammar and still be interested in his writing.

If high school students are required to study about history and learn math problems that people in the past invented then why shouldn’t high school students study about Shakespeare? Shakespeare’s literature inspires many people around the world to write and the way he wrote his plays and poems were very unique. I strongly believe that high students should study about Shakespeare because it will allow them to understand English literature better and it will also allow them to express themselves a lot better.

William Shakespeare invented a lot of the words in the English language, many of them are still in use today. This is one reason to study Shakespeare's works.

Another reason to learn Shakespeare is that Shakespeare is that Shakespeare was an expert in using words to make ordinary people understand things and feel emotion. He was a great writer who wrote plays not for highly educated people, but for everyone to enjoy. In these plays, he talked about controversial topics, tragedy, horror, fantasy, love, and famous people. We can learn from Shakespeare if we want to be able to influence other people as well as he did.

Shakspeare is a genius that wrote many plays back during the 1600s before slang and the 21st century. Of course we wil not be able to understand the work he writes and thats why we have people who do understand it translate his work into peices we should be able to understand. With translation everybody should be able to figure out that Shakespeares work is all about love, lust, jealousy, fear, war and death; which is all modern.

Shakespeare's is one of the greatest writer of all time, and mostly all of his works are considered classic. Not studying any of shakespears works would be considered an insult to his writing ability. Shakespeare changed the English language as we know it, and he did it all through his plays, and stories.

Yes, i feel we shuld change books. The same book every year for classes gets pretty lame. It's just an opinion but i just feel there are better books to read. Maybe a book that has easier reading it and to where i am able to understand the whole time what they are talking about. Mysterious books area good choice, they don't have to be hard but something that will keep me interested!

I believe that Shakespeare's writing's are important for high schools to read. It often shows different situations with different conflicts which you have to think about to understand. I do think that they should rewrite the plays using more modern terms. The reason high school students dint like the plays is because the dint understand the terminology, but they are all great stories and have great meaning behind them.

Shakespeare is something that should be taught in high school because he is history. He wrote a lot of great plays and most of the time students can relate to them in some kind of way. Some things are kind of hard to understand but that is why they write modern versions of his plays. So there is no excuse not to learn about him.

I agree for Shakespeare's works to be continued at the high school level because he is a great part of literature and the sooner we learn from him the more beneficial it is for us. Also, if we learn about him now our minds will be more understandable into Shakespeare's writing. It may be a challenge for us but that will be very useful for us in the future.

I agree that shakespear should be studied because some people like shakespear. But for me it really dosnt intrest me at all. But i listen to it when my teacher teaches it because i no that it will helpd me later in college.

Yes I think Shakespeare's work should be continued at the high school level simply because it will help students read at a more college level because Shakespeare's work is more difficult to read than other literature and also because he has made great stories, and although I'm not a big fan of reading I sometimes will read some of Shakespeare's work such as Romeo and Juliet, and Julius Caesar.

Shakespeare should absolutely continue to be taught in high schools. His work deals with many real life situations, and is an up most example of beautiful literature written by a man far beyond his own time. The aspects of Shakespeare's writing techniques are unique, and broaden ways of thinking about things. I believe that if students would assimilate more of the meaning behind this talented mans work they would really be surprised.

I think that Shakespeare being taught in highschool is essential if we want our population to actually know how to speak correctly. Even though it's not how we speak right now and some of the words may be switched around, understanding Shakespeare is the next step to understanding modern day english. And even without that factor, Shakespeare was a language connosieur, a legend, a classic, you can't just...stop teaching about him. He was a stone in the wall that is literature today, and without him in the specific place he's in; the wall will crumble, and our society will become even more illiterate than it already is.

Yes, I beleive that at this age students should be required to study shakespear's works. Teenagers should be intelligent enough to understand literature at shakespear's level. I'm not saying teens should be smart enough to write like shakespeare, but at least be able to study it. If kids at this age aren't able to take an english with adequate study over shakespeare, then it's because they are lazy or have no business being in high school.

I say yes to that question because Shakespeare’s plays and stories that he had written are interesting in a weird way of literature. Each sentence garbs a persons mind and makes him or her think about the curtain image that’s going on in that story’s point. It’s a challenge for young readers to read the plays he wrote, Romeo and Juliet the mind blowing drama that has captured the world’s heart in every single way and students now a days should be have respect for Shakespeare’s work and learn of it instead of brushing it away.

Side: yes

Because Shakespeare's works are so difficult to understand, I think they should continue to be studied in highschool to broaden our horizons and expand our minds. Shakespeare covered many univeresal themes and conflicts that people face everyday. Studying his works, we learn morals.

Yes, I do believe that Shakesphere's works should continue to be studied at the High School level. With our current situation of our Economy, the students need to learn more than they try not to. The reason is because jobs with high pay will only hire people with good vocabulary, great skills that are needed for the company to look better than other companies, and the appearance of a perfessional worker that is needed in this world. If people fail to see that their future seems far away, then our world might lead to a horrible future. For our future, we all must be educated.

Yes, I think that Shakespeare should keep being taught in high school because you can learn alot from it. Even though it may seem old and outdated, if you go in depth and actually understand it, then you will get alot out of it.

I say yes we should Because He is a grate writer and we can learn a lot more about writing and literature from the work that his done so I think we should keep learning Shakespeare’s work at a high school level.

I say sure why not. He is a real good writer. He style of writing kinda change the world for writers. When he came along the where new writers everywhere. Plus some of his stories does deal with high school, if you really think about it. Like his famous story Romeo and Juliet. That story is really all about high school lovers. Well that is what i think high school is about. I mean all you have to do is just read his book and think and understand and you will too figure out that Romeo and Juliet is like high school love.

I say that Shakespeare’s work shouldn’t be continued in high schools because for one the type of writing is an older version in which students these days are not familiar with any more and when his stories are read not even the third of the reading makes sense to the students and teachers have to take a few extra hours of teaching to explain just for students to get a very huge view of what the story is shaping out to be in their heads. another point is langrage the thou and thy and all the term analogy that Shakespeare used in the time was used and now that same type of writing or speaking doesn’t make sense to people anymore and withal these new words that teenagers come up with it will only get harder for them to understand the true meaning of the text.

Although I believe and acknowledge that Shakespeare was a great and legendery writer, I do not think it is mandotory that we read this kind of literature in high school. If you ask most of the people that are still in high school about the stories of Shakespeare, they will look at you with a blank face of confusion. A story of like McBeth or Hamlet would be better understood by a college student that knows more about litereature and of the old English language

I don't think we should be learning about Shakespeare's works because a lot of the students don't find it very interesting. In my opinion, I find Shakespeare and his medieval works very boring. For example, when my freshmen English class read Romeo and Juliet more then half the class would fall asleep. No one really paid any attention. Also, sometimes Shakespeare can be a lot to handle. It's sometimes to hard to understand. Even though now they have translations in our English, many students still find it very difficult to understand what the characters are talking about. I think we should stick to other type of literature that captures our attention.

I know countles people who find higher level math such as calculus boring and difficult, probably moreso than Shakespeare's works.

At least, Shakespeare goes over universal themes and ideas which can educates one about the world and life.

I think that Shakespeare's work should not be studied at high school, its really boring, and plus why are we reading all this stories? we could be reading another ones, more interesting. This Shakespeare thing was from a long time ago, we should start studying more stuf from the present day, not from the past. As the way I see it students don't like this shakespeares stories.

I feel like Shakespeare's work should no be studied at the high school level. Most students in high shool are not interested in Shakespeare's work because either it bores them or they have difficulty understanding all of it. I's hard enough to get students to do their work and will be even harder when they aren't interested in doing it. Students want to read about things going on in their lives, stuff they can relate to and no something that doesn't interest them.

I agree Shakespeare is a literary genius but his works can be easily misunderstood. To expect a typical high school student to know about archetypes that play into the 1600's is asking too much. I'm not saying none will understand it, but his works will be a lot easier to grasp at a college level.

Side: No

Shakespeare is indeed a great poet, and while yes his works are enumerous and well-known; they aren't the most popular reading material. First off if you cant even read the text itself, you cant begin to enjoy it, and then on top of that its hard to ccatch the underlying tone and figure out what's truly going on within the text. I do however suggest that we atleast attempt to read it at one point in our lives, but high school, is not that time.

I dont think that Shakespeare should not be studied in English because it does not use correct english. It has good stories but is hard to follow.

Obviously we DO still need to learn about Shakespeare, learning Shakespeare can teach you how to put your words in the correct ORDER which then cause you to have "correct English".

Well personally i like Shakespeare and his plays, but thats just the thing they should be enjoyed as plays and not as literature. The honest truth is that most teenagers these day just don't understand the way people talked years ago and it could be confusing for people who aren't into it. As much as some people hate to admit it some kids just refuse to learn interesting things.

Although, Shakespeare Is a Great Poet & a Strong Writer. I strongly think that He really Doesn't have anything to Deal with English. In a typical English Class, I think that some High School Students won't want to learn about Shakespeare. Students would Rather Books that catches their Interest or their beliefs in something. For some High School students Shakespeare maybe easier for them to understand.I'm not saying that People wont understand more than others but His mind of Work and It would Probably work well with College and More advanced People On a College Level.

Yes Shakespeare is one of the most influental poets of all time, but I believe that times change and with that Shakespeare is obsolete. My beliefs on Shakespeare are very negative and so is the majority of the people that have to learn about his work. We can study and learn the literature on someone else why Shakespeare? His literature is old and played out, but for now what can we do? With that I believe that Shakespeare works should not be taught in school but we should move on and let it go.

I really dont know why its so important, because to me its just a waste of time that could be spent doing something more interesting. how can reading about what color the sky is or how angry a person looks be entertaining. It just shows how borring things like Shakespeare can be, I mean, its not like we are going to use this in real life unless your going to be a musician or something of that type of field.

No, i do not think that Shakespeare's work should be studied in high school especially in Texas because it is difficult and somewhat challenging and really does not determine if we graduate or not. There are other difficult things we need to kno or do such as pass TAKS, other tests, and jus graduating because we work so hard not for shakespeare but for the TAKS because if we dont pass we wont graduate.

I think that shakespeare should not be studied in high school, because it really has nothing to do with english or any other subject. The only thing that shakespeare does is make students work harder to pronounce words in the story that are incorrect anyway.

Pronunciation is a big part of the English language and so grammar. What Shakespeare’s work teaches your pronunciation and what proper grammar looks like. His work also teaches you how to think out side of your own box and at a harder level so you are better prepared for college and or a conversation with some one.

okay well first of all shakespear is literature and literature is a part of english 4. second the words are correct thats just how they talked back then. The way most people talk today is incorrect because they are to lazy to just say the whole word. Just say for sure and not fo sho. seriously!
